Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT)
OMPT is a subspecialty of orthopedic physical therapy. OMPT is much more than a set of techniques or “hands-on” treatment. It involves a systematic and structured approach to the evaluation and management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders of the spine and extremities. OMPT utilizes advanced clinical reasoning and manual skills to identify and assess impairments in mobility, strength, and coordination that may be contributing to pain and disability. Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy is a patient-centered approach requiring skilled questioning and careful listening. It is grounded in a biopsychosocial framework, meaning the patient’s values, beliefs, and feeling about their condition are equally as important as the physical findings in managing their problem.
